Unbridled Blooms: To Vase or Not To Vase

Unbridled Blooms: To Vase or Not To Vase

At 6th & Foster, we love giving you options. One of the most frequent decisions our customers make is whether to receive your flowers as a Vased Arrangement or as a Hand-Tied Bouquet, ready to place in your own vase or container at home.

Interestingly, the expectation that flowers must arrive in a vase is a uniquely American tradition. In Europe, hand-tied bouquets are the standard—you’ll see them exquisitely designed, placed in water for transport, and beautifully wrapped at all the fine flower shops of London, Paris, and beyond. When we traveled through Europe several years ago, we knew right away this was a practice we wanted to bring home.

Our European Inspiration

We could never choose just one, so here are some of our favorite sources of inspiration for our Hand-Tied Bouquets. From left to right: the timeless artistry of Moyses Stevens and Jane Packer in London, followed by the exquisite designs of Désirée in Paris. Each represents the elegance and refinement of Europe’s finest flower shops—where blooms are gathered with care, wrapped to perfection, and ready to bring beauty home. At 6th & Foster, we carry this tradition forward, creating hand-tied bouquets that embody the same sense of luxury, artistry, and effortless style.

When a Vase Makes Sense

There are certainly times when a vase is the most thoughtful choice—such as sending flowers to a hospital, a new parent, or anyone who might not have a container handy. In these moments, a vased arrangement is both convenient and essential.

A vase is also the best choice when the design itself is highly stylized or complex. Some arrangements are architectural in nature, requiring careful balance, layering, and precise placement of blooms. These artistic compositions must be handled by an expert designer and presented in a vase to ensure they arrive exactly as intended.

That said, many occasions simply don’t require a vase—and skipping it has distinct advantages. From directing more of your budget toward premium blooms, to reducing waste and embracing sustainability, a hand-tied bouquet offers both beauty and practicality.

Why Choose a Hand-Tied Bouquet?

  • More Blooms for Your Budget
On average, the vase accounts for 15–30% of the total cost of an arrangement. Without it, your budget goes directly toward more flowers.

  • You Already Own Vases
Most of us have a shelf or cabinet filled with vases from past arrangements. Why accumulate more? Better yet, take advantage of our Vase Recycling Program—bring them to us and we’ll gladly reuse them.

  • Supply Chain Challenges
Glass and ceramic containers have become harder to source, and prices have increased dramatically. By choosing a hand-tied bouquet, you’re not only saving money, you’re avoiding unnecessary waste.

  • Your Vase, Your Style
Flowers look extraordinary in unique vessels—a family heirloom, a ceramic pitcher, or a special container that reflects your personal style. Bring it in, and our designers will happily create a custom arrangement tailored to your container. We’ve filled everything from heirloom crystal to wooden dough bowls—even a hollowed-out ram’s horn!

  • Better for the Planet
Sustainability is one of our core values at 6th & Foster. By choosing a hand-tied bouquet, you reduce waste and support our efforts to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

Our Commitment

Hand-Tied Bouquet by 6th & Foster

At 6th & Foster, our commitment is to both artistry and responsibility. We believe that exquisite floral design and ecological care should go hand in hand. Each arrangement is created with intention, using the freshest blooms available—sourced locally whenever possible to support our community and reduce environmental impact.

We avoid floral foam whenever we can, reserving its use only for situations where no other design solution will achieve the stability a piece requires. Instead, we prioritize sustainable techniques that protect both the flowers and the planet. We also reuse containers when possible and encourage our clients to participate in our recycling efforts. Whether you choose a hand-tied bouquet or a vased arrangement, you can trust that your flowers will be crafted not only with luxury and beauty in mind, but also with conscious respect for the environment.

Calathea Care Guide: How to Keep Your Calathea Thriving Indoors

Calathea Care Guide: How to Keep Your Calathea Thriving Indoors

Calathea plants, also known as prayer plants, are admired for their bold patterns and colorful leaves. Their striking foliage makes them a favorite for indoor plant lovers, but their tropical origins mean they need a bit of special attention. This Calathea care guide will help you keep your plant healthy and vibrant year-round.

Understanding Calethea Plants

Calatheas are native to the tropical forests of South America, where they thrive in warm, humid, and shaded environments. Known for their unique habit of folding leaves at night (earning the “prayer plant” nickname), these beauties bring movement and texture to any space.

Popular varieties include:

  • Calathea makoyana (Peacock Plant)

  • Calathea lancifolia (Rattlesnake Plant)

  • Calathea orbifolia

  • Calathea medallion

Best Light for Calathea

The right Calathea light requirements are crucial for healthy growth. Calatheas prefer bright, indirect light that mimics dappled sunlight from a forest canopy.

  • Do: Place near an east- or north-facing window.

  • Don’t: Expose to direct sunlight—it can scorch leaves and fade colors.
Rotate the plant every few weeks to encourage even growth.

The Right Humidity & Temperature for Calathea

Humidity plays a major role in Calathea plant care. Aim for 50–65% humidity and a consistent temperature of 65–85°F (18–29°C).

Tips to increase humidity:

  • Place a humidifier nearby.

  • Use a pebble tray under the pot.

  • Group Calathea with other humidity-loving plants.

Avoid cold drafts, heating vents, and sudden temperature changes.

Watering Your Calathea Properly

Consistent moisture is key. Calatheas like their soil to stay evenly moist but not soggy.

  • Check soil: Water when the top 1–2 inches are dry.

  • Use the right water: Calatheas are sensitive to chlorine and fluoride, so use filtered, distilled, or rainwater for best results.

  • Avoid overwatering: Sitting water can cause root rot. Make sure your pot has proper drainage.

Best Soil for Calathea Plants

Calathea roots thrive in light, well-draining soil that retains moisture without becoming compacted.

Recommended mix:

  • Coco coir or peat moss for moisture retention

  • Perlite or orchid bark for drainage

  • A touch of compost for nutrients

This mix keeps roots healthy and prevents waterlogging.

Fertilizing Calathea for Healthy Growth

During spring and summer, feed your Calathea with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month.

  • Skip fertilizing in fall and winter when growth naturally slows.

  • Always water before fertilizing to prevent root burn.

Common Problems & How To Fix Them

Even with the best care, Calatheas can develop issues. Here’s how to troubleshoot:

  • Brown leaf tips or edges → Low humidity or mineral build-up from tap water

  • Curling leaves → Underwatering or dry air

  • Drooping leaves → Dry soil or sudden temperature changes

  • Yellow leaves → Overwatering or poor drainage

Prune damaged leaves with clean scissors to encourage fresh, healthy growth.

Final Thoughts on Calathea Care

Calatheas may have a reputation for being fussy, but with the right routine, they can thrive indoors. Follow this Calathea care guide—providing bright, indirect light, consistent moisture, good humidity, and proper soil—and you’ll enjoy vibrant foliage and a healthier plant for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions About Calathea

Is Calathea Easy to Care For?

Calathea can be easy to care for once you understand its needs. These tropical plants thrive with consistent watering, high humidity, filtered light, and clean water. While they may seem fussy at first, a stable routine makes Calathea care much more manageable.

Why does my Calathea have brown edges?

Brown edges on Calathea leaves are usually caused by low humidity or minerals in tap water. To fix this, raise humidity levels and switch to distilled, filtered, or rainwater. Prune affected leaves to encourage healthy new growth.

How much light does a Calathea need?

Calathea plants need bright, indirect light—like what you’d find near an east- or north-facing window. Direct sunlight can scorch or fade their leaves, so filtered or diffused light is best.

How often should I water my Calathea?

Water your Calathea when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Always use a pot with good drainage to prevent root rot.

Can I use tap water for my Calathea?

Tap water often contains chlorine, fluoride, and salts that can damage Calathea leaves. It’s best to use filtered, distilled, or rainwater, or let tap water sit out overnight to allow some chemicals to dissipate.

What is the best soil for Calathea?

Calatheas thrive in light, well-draining soil that retains moisture. A good mix includes coco coir or peat, perlite, and a small amount of compost or orchid bark.

Do Calatheas like humidity?

Yes! Calatheas need moderate to high humidity (50–65%) to thrive. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or group with other plants to raise moisture levels—especially in winter or dry climates.

Are Calathea plants safe for pets?

Yes, Calathea is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a pet-friendly choice for plant lovers.

Romance and Twinkling Lights

Romance and Twinkling Lights

A Vision of Romance from the Very First Meeting

From the very first meeting, Andrew could envision Emilia’s wedding. She was one of the happiest, most relaxed brides, with a crystal-clear vision: a celebration that blended summer romance with casual family fun. Picture twinkling lights, glowing candles, and airy floral designs perfectly complementing the season.

The wedding took place at the stunning Redfield Estate at The Grove in Glenview, Illinois—a stately historic home with an elegant covered pavilion, surrounded by a breathtaking 150-acre nature preserve. Emilia and Nicholas exchanged vows beneath the sweeping branches of a majestic oak tree, a setting that felt both intimate and timeless.

Locally Sourced Flowers for a Romantic Garden Wedding

With most blooms sourced from a local flower farm, we curated floral arrangements that captured Emilia’s vision of effortless beauty. Her bouquet featured a romantic mix of summer florals in soft, airy tones. The pavilion’s long farm tables were decorated with scattered vases of vibrant seasonal blooms, creating a just-picked wildflower feel that enhanced the venue’s natural charm.

Emilia’s bridal bouquet stands out as one of our top five favorites of all time. Lush, textural, and artfully arranged, it perfectly reflected the romantic garden style she had imagined.

The Team

An elegant and memorable event like Nicholas & Emilia’s wedding doesn’t happen wtihout an amazing team of professionals – some seen and some unseen. We are grateful to have worked with such a team!
